Eclipse Plan

On Monday, August 21, 2017, North America will experience a solar eclipse. In Bauxite, the event will occur between 11:48 a.m. and 2:46 p.m. Student safety is our top priority, and Bauxite School District has carefully developed plans for each campus.

At Pine Haven Elementary, students will view the eclipse via NASA’s Livestream and use NASA’s resources to educate students about the eclipse.

At Bauxite Middle School, students with signed parent permission forms will be allowed to view the eclipse indirectly via pinhole viewers.  While using the viewers, students will have their backs to the sun and will see a reflected image of the eclipse on paper.

At Bauxite High School and Miner Academy, outside transitions will occur during the eclipse window. A letter was sent home with each child on August 17 asking parents to talk to their student regarding the eclipse and eye safety. Students will view the eclipse with NASA-certified eclipse viewers or pinhole viewers if they return signed parent permission forms. Other students who wish to view the eclipse will be allowed to do so via NASA’s Livestream.

This special event can lead to great interest and excitement in science and astronomy, and we are excited to teach our students about the eclipse while ensuring their safety. Please contact your child’s school with any questions about the eclipse plan.
